THE SUN IS ALWAYS SHINING SOMEWHERE
3 and 7 day Bali Itinerary for the perfect surf holiday
Here's a simple 3 or 7 day itinerary for Bali...
There is probably nowhere else in the world than Bali with such a high concentration of world class surf breaks.
With no land between Bali and Antarctica swells make their move all the way up from the Southern Ocean and then the Indian ocean without hindrance to arrive on the shores of southern Bali and most of the south facing coasts in Indonesia. With consistent trade winds from the east in the dry season and westerly winds in the wet season, a surfer in Bali only needs to move from west coast in the dry season to east coast in the wet season to find great offshore conditions on most days.
As the dry season and easterly trade winds provide a longer season than the wet, our Bali itinerary will be based around this season.
Our 3 day Bali itinerary is to start on Day 1 at Kuta for surfing at the airport reefs. The airport reefs provide a range of mainly left hand breaks working at most tide options and picking up most swell arriving in Bali.
Days 2 and three are spent down on the Bukit at accommodation at either Uluwatu, Padang Padang or Bingin. From any of these locations you can then spend your two days surfing breaks such as Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Impossibles, Bingin, Dreamland and Balangan. On medium to large days all these breaks should be working where as on small swells, Uluwatu is sure to have a wave.
Our 7 day Bali itinerary starts the same way as the three day itinerary. On days 4 and 5 we move to Canggu. Despite its popularity and crowd factor, it’s worth the experience to surf the variety of breaks Canggu has to offer and enjoy the Canggu cafes, restaurants and night life.
Day 6 of our Bali itinerary is Balian approximately a one hour drive from Canggu. Balian is a quiet local town reminiscent of times gone past. There are plenty of accommodation options and several restaurants. The surf is a peak with rights and lefts suitable for anyone from intermediate level.
On the final day of our Bali itinerary we drive just thirty minutes further to the west to the left hand point break of Medewi. Like Balian, Medewi is another quiet area mainly popular with surfers. The long left hander is gentle but provides lots of fun and opportunities for carving turns. With sharp barnacles on the boulders as you enter and exit the break, remember to bring booties.
